         Winter-Spring classes. I'm preparing to teach some upcoming nature and culture classes, this winter-spring semester.  See Galien Valley Nature and Culture Program website, for details.

         Snow and Ice. This January, about 2-inches of snow covers the ground, now and then.   It's been freezing or below freezing throughout January, but not much snow.  One day, on January 1st, freezing rain coated everything with ice and icicles.  See photos of ice and snow, in my daily blog.

 

         Three Oaks, Michigan, USA.  Enjoy some views of my town, the small town of Three Oaks (population 1,600), a few of its parks, gardens, streets, houses, downtown, etc., covered in snow and ice, in my daily blog.

         Celebrate the Outdoors of the year 2020.  Happy End of the Year.  Celebrate the Four Seasons.  Nature is different, yet beautiful, every day.   I've taken a seasonal series of photos of a few places.   I have winter, spring, summer, and fall photos of a pond, as well as of a creek in the woods —  see them in my daily blog.

 

         Nature Photos.  Recently, I saw crepuscular rays, through the clouds, over Lake Michigan.  For education, I've been reviewing some rock concepts and my rock collection, including rocks from Lake Michigan beaches.  The leaves have fallen from the trees, but the fungi are still clinging to tree trunks.  See crepuscular rays, rocks, and fungi, in my daily blog.

         Fall 2020 Nature Classes.
Through the Galien Valley Nature and Culture Program,
 I'm teaching 3 weekly nature classes:
 Habitats and Wildlife, an in-person class, outdoors, at a nature center;
 Nature and Community Arts, an in-person class, outdoors;
 Backyard Nature Zoom, an online class, with each of us in our own backyards.
These classes include activities in an ABC Garden: science stations and art projects of vital community tasks (housing, water, fuel, food, sanitation, etc.).  The ABC Garden is a landscape architecture design of outdoor classrooms.  See ABC Garden concept photos, in my daily blog, as well as in my general website: www.z-hub.org.    

 

         Virtual Art Show.  Many art shows have become virtual, this year.  I entered some of my art into Hazelhurst's Virtual Art Show.  See art photos, in my daily blog. 

         Happy Fall: October-November-December!   Happy Orange and Brown, such as the orange pumpkins, the brown crunchy fallen leaves, and many brown seeds (acorns, etc.).  We had a week of unusually warm weather, in early November.          Fall Harvest Photos.  In October, from my veggie garden, my family harvested the big pumpkins and the rest of the colorful gourds, which grew from the plants that are planted between my 1993 printed emails. (I used newspaper and printed emails like mulch for weed control.)  See my art, my still life photos of pumpkins and colorful gourds, in my daily blog.

         Veggie Garden.  In September, many colorful gourds have grown from the plants that are planted between my 1993 printed emails. (I used newspaper and printed emails like mulch for weed control.)  The mini-pumpkins have become ripe for harvest.  Our big-pumpkins, butternut squash, and watermelons are still ripening.  See photos of my veggie garden, in my daily blog.

         ABC Garden.  I'm still advocating the ABC Garden infrastructure, including it's science stations and art studio spaces of vital community tasks (housing, water, fuel, food, sanitation, etc.).  Plus, I'm preparing for my fall classes, the nature classes that I'm teaching on Zoom and in-person at a nature center.  See ABC Garden concept photos, in my daily blog, as well as in my general website: www.z-hub.org.

           Pinterest.  For years, I've avoided getting a Pinterest account, because I didn't want another internet activity to absorb my time.  Over the years, internet search engines often show pinterest images.  This August, there were a few Pinterest images that I was especially interested in looking into further, so finally I got a Pinterest account.  Plus, I did pin a few of my own images on Pinterest.          Blue and Green. Happy Summer: July-August-September! Happy Blue and Green. Recently, the sky has been sunny and clear or mostly clear, and we see that blue sky, and the green plants, in front of the blue sky. Green plants: garden veggies, trees, leaves, beach grass, etc, against that big blue sky and beautiful blue water of Lake Michigan.  Summer is so blue and green. See photos in my daily blog.    

         Veggie Garden.  In August, huge gourd plants are growing between my 1993 printed emails. (I used newspaper and printed emails like mulch for weed control.)  The gourd plants are flowering and we're already seeing gourd fruits starting to grow.  In August, many of my veggie plants were flowering.  Also, we harvested zucchini, cucumbers, basil, and kale.  My veggie plants were so little on Day 25 (July 15) and they were so big by Day 50 (August 9).  You must see photos of my garden on Day 25 and Day 50, in my daily blog.

           2020 Garden of 1993 Emails.  My famous July 2020 activity is my 2020 veggie garden of printed 1993 emails of mine.  My veggie garden uses paper (3 layers of paper or newspaper) as mulch to prevent weeds from growing.  This year I used printed 1993 emails.  My freshman year of college, 1993, was the first year ever that university students had email, so these emails are historic.  I saved some.  My 1993-95 emails are from long-time friends from my elementary school in New York, from my high school in Pennsylvania, and from the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign).  Now, gourds are sprouting between the emails.  My garden also has sprouts of zucchini, pumpkins, watermelon, cucumbers, potatoes, and basil.  Some veggie plants have quickly grown big from seed, in only 30 days.  (See photos of veggies sprouting between emails in my daily blog.)

         Lake Michigan Beach.  July has had many lovely hot summer beach days, along Lake Michigan. It's a desolate beach with plenty of room for social distancing.  The afternoon air has been hot, 85-90 degrees F (29-32 degrees C).  The lake water has been warm, 70-75 degrees F (21-23 degrees C).   A few days are cloudy, rainy, and or windy with a wavy lake.  Most days are sunny and the lake is calm and flat.   (See beach photos in my daily blog.) 

          Roadside Wildflowers.  My July 2020 daily blog includes photos of roadside wildflowers, including Michigan's native flowers and exotic invasive flowers.  Native flowers include Milkweeds, Coneflowers, and Queen of the Prairie.  Exotic flowers include Chicory, Queen Anne's Lace, Teasel, and Daylilies.   (See roadside wildflower photos, in my daily blog.)

June 2020 - Spring!

           Each month it is fun to find and eat wild edible plants. In June, the Shamrock (Oxalis sp.) is an available wild edible plant.  The Shamrock also has yellow flowers in June.  My June daily blog shows flowers blooming on native and exotic plants, in Michigan.  In June, the native woody plants that bloom include the Tuliptree, Arrowwood Viburnum, and the Mapleleaf Viburnum.  A few exotic plants, from Asia, that bloom are the Bridalwreath Spirea, the Beautybush, and Bleeding Hearts.  (See photos of June spring flowers blooming, in my daily blog.)

         June also has some first early fruits and seeds that mature and drop - including the Silver Maple winged-seeds (the samaras, or helicopters), as well as the Cottonwood seeds float in the air and cover the ground with their cottony fluff.  In June, the bugs are in full swing, including butterflies, fireflies, and damselflies.           Also, my June 2020 daily blog has a calendar list (with some photos) of the daily weather and phenology.  Phenology includes the changes of plants and animals over the month, seasons, and year.  For example, when a tree blooms, grows leaves, grows fruit, fruits ripen, leaves change color, and leaves fall off.   In June, there's the phenology of which days selected flowers were blooming, including native wildflowers: Sand Coreopsis, Spiderwort, Blue Flag Iris, and more.  (See calendar of June spring flowers blooming on trees, shrubs, and flowers, in my daily blog.)

           In May, new leaves grow on deciduous trees, in Michigan.  Thus, my May 2020 daily blog includes trees with new leaves.  Plus, my blog has a flower photos series of tulips, a redbud, pear trees, and a weeping cherry tree, and other flowers.  The series shows flowers budding and blooming, over the a course of a few weeks.  The weeping cherry tree dropped its flowers and grew new leaves by May 8th, but redbud flowers were in full bloom, on May 8th.
